So, what are you waiting for? 🤔 Dive in and join the sustainability journey! 🌊🌱💚

1. Introduction

Hotel companies have been showing growing interest in implementing environmental management systems (EMSs) due to increased environmental laws and consumer pressure. However, comprehensive research on the effectiveness of these systems within the hotel industry remains limited. This report aims to address this research gap and discusses the various challenges and potential solutions associated with sustainable hotel development.

2. The Role of Environmental Management Systems

A qualitative case study conducted at an international hotel in Hong Kong targeted the application and evaluation of EMSs. The study identified four influential factors in the formation stage of EMS: corporate governance, piloting activities, initial gap analysis, and partnership with external consultancy. The implementation of EMS in the hotel context was found to be greatly influenced by six common EMS elements identified in literature. A top-down approach was deemed more suitable for a hotel with a predominantly Chinese workforce due to cultural considerations.

3. Challenges in Implementing Sustainability Initiatives

Despite the increasing interest, the hotel industry has been slow in implementing sustainability initiatives. This delay is largely due to complex management contracts that favor control over collaboration and add extra stakeholders to the equation, making sustainability more complex. Specific configurations of these contracts can result in higher levels of stakeholder detachment, further impeding sustainability efforts. Despite these challenges, some chain and independent companies have made significant strides towards improving environmental sustainability within the industry.

4. Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) plays a crucial role in sustainable hotel development, especially with trends leaning towards sustainability and responsible management. However, a lack of standardized CSR scales within the industry continues to pose significant challenges. A recent study aims to address this by developing a multidimensional scale for measuring hotel CSR as perceived by hotel staff well-versed with CSR principles.

5. Green Practices in Hotels

An examination of green practices in award-winning hotels revealed varying degrees of commitment towards different aspects of green practices. Energy-saving measures, water conservation, and waste management were found to be popular among these hotels, while fewer hotels focused on staff training, noise control, odor control, and motivating green practices. Green certification had both positive and negative effects on hotels’ green practices; however, the positive influence outweighed the negatives.

6. Environmental Awareness Among Hotel Managers

The hotel industry’s heavy consumption of energy, water, and non-durable products necessitates heightened environmental awareness among hotel managers. However, there seems to be a lack of information on the level of such awareness especially in regions like Turkey where assessing policy and business practices is needed to control environmental impacts.

In conclusion, while legal issues and sustainable development continue to pose challenges for the hotel industry globally, various avenues for improvement exist. These include implementing effective EMSs, fostering greater stakeholder collaboration, standardizing CSR measures, promoting green practices, and enhancing environmental awareness among managers. Future research is needed to validate these findings and further explore ways to enhance sustainability initiatives within this industry.
